Turkmenistan's president, President Saparmyrat Turkmenbashy Niyazov, has signed a decree declaring Victory Day, May 9th, as an annual national public holiday of the Turkmen people and a day off.
May 9th was a public holiday in the former Soviet Union, but was not included in Turkmenistan's list of public holidays when Turkmenistan gained independence after the fall of the Soviet Union.
