The government of Kazakhstan has gazetted amendments to the "Law on Holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan" by the introduction of day in lieu public holidays to be declared on the Monday that follows a fixed-date public holiday falling on a weekend.
The most immediate consequence of this amendment, which comes into effect as of today, is that there will be an additional public holiday on Tuesday, December 18, 2001, to compensate the fact that December 16, the first day of the annual 2-day Independence Day public holidays, falls on a Sunday in 2001.
Therefore this year's Independence Day public holidays will last 4 days, from Saturday, December 15, until Tuesday, December 18, 2001, inclusively.
While the aforementioned amendment makes the declaration of days in lieu automatic, the amended "Law on Holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan" still maintains the ad hoc possibility for the government to move non-working days from the weekend to the Monday or Friday adjoining a fixed-date public holiday (see, for example, 14-Aug-2001 and 19-Apr-2001).
