Latvia Adds May 4 To Official Public Holidays List

(Posted on Thursday, January 17, 2002)

Earlier today, the Saeima (Latvia's parliament) passed in its second reading, an amendment to the Law On Public Holidays And Commemoration Days which designates May 4, henceforth, as an annual official public holiday in Latvia.

May 4, 1990, was the date of parliament's adoption of the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia.

The Saeima also backed a proposal designating August 21 as the day of adoption of the Constitutional Law on the statehood of the Republic of Latvia and, thus, the "de facto" restoration of independence. This change, however seems to have much less support amongst parlamentarians, and may yet come to nothing.
