Peru's Cabinet approved a decree declaring a 3-week year-end public sector holiday, from December 16, 2002, until January 3, 2003.
President Alejandro Toledo said the extended break would boost domestic tourism and allow workers to visit family across Peru, all the while lowering electricity, paper, water and other administrative costs for the government.
Peru's Prime Minister, Luis Solari, further justified the measure by saying that other countries also shut down their civil service (except for emergency services)at the end of every year (Nicaragua, for example, 05-Dec-2001).
