South Korean Chongwadae (presidential offices) spokesperson, Park Sun-sook, has announced that the government of South Korea had decided to declare next Monday, July 1, 2002, the day after the World Cup final, a public holiday, "irrespective of the result of the semifinal match between Korea and Germany on Tuesday, June 25, 2002".

Last week (22-Jun-2002), the South Korean media had been rife with rumours that the South Korean Government is considering making Monday, July 1, 2002, a one-off public holiday in the event that South Korea would qualify for the finals of the 2002 Football World Cup, in the June 25 semi-final match against Germany.

As per the aforementioned statement, the government will formally designate July 1st, 2002, as a one-off public holiday at tomorrow's cabinet meeting, to be presided over by President Kim Dae-jung.
