  • Bangladesh To Annualize August 5 Public Holiday
Ministry of Public Administration, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh (Dhaka)

The Interim chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Tarique Rahman, has announced that today's August 5 Mass Uprising Day public holiday commemorating the ouster of the previous Awami League administration, would be an annual public holiday.

Recall that, shortly after coming to power, last year, Bangladesh's interim military government had overhauled the list of annual public holidays.

This overhaul included the extension of both the Eid al-Fitr (End of Ramadan) and the Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) annual public holidays to last 5 days and 6 days, respectively, as well as an extension to the annual Durga Puja public holiday to last 2 days.

However, Bangladesh's military canceled the March 17 public holiday commemorating the birthday of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Children's Day, as well as the annual August 15, National Mourning Day, public holiday, which had been closely tied to the previous Awami League administration.

Last June, the Cabinet Division of Bangladesh's interim military government issued 2 notices declaring 3 new national days to commemorate last July's uprising which led to the fall of the Awami League administration, including August 5 to be marked as July Mass Uprising Day, a category A public holiday.

Finally, at the end of last month, Bangladesh's Central Bank released an amended version of its previously-released list of official bank holidays for the calendar year 2025 which now included a bank holiday for July Revolution Day on August 5.

  • Philippines Barangay Elections Likely To Be Postponed To 2026
Official Gazette of the Republic of the Philippines (Manila)

The Philippines Commission on Elections (Comelec) has announced that it now expects President Marcos to defer the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) scheduled for December 1st, 2025, until November 2, 2026.

That postponement would come from the signature (or non-veto) by President Marcos of the Senate Bill (SB) 2816 extending and rescheduling the 2025 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).

As per Comelec Chairman, George Garcia, "Any moment from now, the President may sign the (measure into) law because the Palace has not shown any indication that the proposal will be vetoed".

Recall that, earlier this month, the Philippines Commission on Elections (Comelec) had announced that it continued to prepare for the December 1st, 2025, polls while waiting for the signature of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., to the aforementioned bill.

Normally, the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections should occur every 3 years, and have usually been accompanied by the declaration of a one-off public holiday.

However, over the past decade, these elections have often been rescheduled.

The 2018 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections were supposed to be held in late 2016, but were twice postponed, once to 2017 and a second time to 2018.

Then in September 2019, three panels of the Philippines Senate approved moving the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections from May 2020 to May 2023. Eventually, the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections were held on October 30, 2023.
