Bangladesh's main opposition party called a six-hour general strike demanding a public holiday on Monday, August 15, to mark the death anniversary of the country's independence leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was killed in a 1975 military coup.
The Awami League commemorated August 15 as a "national mourning day" and a public holiday when Rahman's daughter, Sheikh Hasina, was prime minister from 1996-2001 (01-Jul-1996).
But a new government led by Hasina's rival, Khaleda Zia, canceled the holiday in late 2001 (24-Dec-2001).
