Parliament passed an amendment to Article 148 of Costa Rica's Labour Code, moving the public holidays of April 11, July 25, August 15, and October 12, to the following Monday, if they fall on a mid-week weekday.
This amendment to the current law on public holidays (17-Jul-1996 and 10-Oct-1996), will take effect starting in 2006.
The one public holiday whose potential change of date caused the most resistance was that on Mothers' Day (August 15), and it is possible that it might be excluded from the scope of the present amendment at a later date.
One of the corrollaries of this new law is that schools and colleges would continue to observe these 4 holidays on their historical date, although the official public holiday could be moved to the following Monday.
The different observance of public holidays for the education sector was already a tradition, prior to the present amendment (10-Apr-2002).
