The government of Kazakhstan has declared Wednesday, January 11, 2006, as a one-off public holiday to allow for a longer celebration of the Kurban Ait (Eid al-Adha) and Orthodox Christmas public holidays which, this year occur around the same time.

In 2006, the Kurban Ait public holiday will occur on Tuesday, January 10, while there will be a day in lieu public holiday on Monday, January 9, to compensate the fact that the January 7 Orthodox Christmas public holiday falls on a weekend.

In compensation for this additional, January 11, public holiday, Saturday, January 14, 2006, has been declared a regular working day in Kazakhstan. The moving of non-working days from the weekend to the Monday or Friday adjoining a fixed-date public holiday has become a regular fixture of the Kazakhstan public holidays calendar (27-Sep-2005, 16-Feb-2005, 08-Apr-2003, and 14-Dec-2002).

The 2 new public holidays for Orthodox Christmas and Kurban Ait were added by a legislative amendment to the Labor Code, at the very end of last year (28-Dec-2005).
