USA (United States) Public Holidays News Update

(Posted on Friday, October 20, 2006)

Source: Islamic Society of North America (ISNA)

ISNA’s Majlis Ash-Shura, the highest policy making body of the ISNA, has resolved to follow the Fiqh Council’s position of using astronomical calculations on the issue of determining the beginning of the Islamic lunar months for North America.

The rule, even simpler than that used in Saudi Arabia, is that the new Islamic Lunar month begins at sunset of the day when the conjunction occurs before 12:00 Noon GMT. If the conjunction occurs after 12:00 UT, then the month begins at sunset of the next day.
