Samoa Changes List Of Public Holidays

(Posted on Saturday, September 15, 2007)

Source: Radio New Zealand International

The government of Samoa has announced that, beginning in 2008, ANZAC Day and Arbor Day would no longer be public holidays, though some commemorative ceremonies will continue to be held on those dates.

In addition, also beginning in 2008, all shops will stay open on the remaining public holidays.

Finally, the birthday of the previous head of state, King Malietoa Tanumafili II, on January 4th, will no longer be a public holiday, as a consequence his death, last spring (11-May-2007 and 15-May-2007).

Recall that almost 3 years ago, the public holiday of Labor Day was cancelled and replaced by a public holiday for Fathers' Day (30-Dec-2004).
