Samoa's Parliament has approved the report on the Public Holidays Bill 2007 by the Primary Production, Commerce, Industry and Labour Committee, reducing the number of public holidays in Samoa, and giving shops the option to open during public holidays.
The aforementioned legislation confirms the government announcement of earlier this year, that, beginning in 2008, ANZAC Day and Arbor Day would no longer be public holidays (15-Sep-2007).
In addition, to the 2 public holidays mentioned above, the Public Holidays Bill 2007 confirms the cancellation of the previously observed "Head of State’s Birthday"public holiday, which was automatically cancelled following the death of King, and Samoan High Chief, Malietoa Tanumafili II (15-May-2007).
A rationale for the reduction in public holidays is given in the "Explanatory Note to the Public Holidays Bill 2007", which mentions that out of the 14 annual public holidays in Samoa, there are nine which fall within the first six months of the year.
