Argentina Considering Amending Law On Movable Public Holidays

(Posted on Thursday, August 21, 2008)

During yesterday's visit of Argentina's President, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, to Mar del Plata, the topic of the upcoming Día de la Raza public holiday was raised.

Advisers close to the President, speaking off-record, said that there was a high likelihood ("hay muchísimas chances") that the President would approve the creation of a day in lieu public holiday on Monday, October 13, 2008, to compensate for the fact that this year's Día de la Raza public holiday falls on a Sunday.

In 2002, a one-off public holiday had been declared on Monday, October 14, 2002, in compensation of the fact that, that year, the October 12 annual public holiday fell on a Saturday (30-Sep-2002).
