After yesterday's final confirmation of 2009 public holidays' dates in Australia's State of Queensland, Workers' Unions are demanding that a day in lieu public holiday be declared on Monday, April 27, 2009, to compensate the fact that ANZAC day falls on a Saturday, in 2009.
This will be the first time since 1998 that ANZAC day falls on a Saturday which means that in most States, except Western Australia, no day in lieu public holiday will be given on the following Monday.
Despite the pressure put on the various State Governments, the odd manner in which the ANZAC day public holiday is treated when it falls on a weekend dates from decades and has, to our knowledge, never suffered any exceptions. Therefore, we do not expect that a day in lieu public holiday will be given in 2009 for ANZAC day.
