Azerbaijan 2009 Public Holidays Announced

(Posted on Sunday, December 14, 2008)

Late on Friday, Azerbaijan’s Cabinet of Ministers issued a decree on "Non-working days on the occasion of Novruz, Ramadan and Gurban holidays in Azerbaijan Republic in 2009", which sets forth the 2009 dates for the upcoming Novruz and 2 Muslim Eid public holidays.

The announced dates, March 20-24 for Novruz, September 20-21 for Ramazan Bayram, and November 27-28 for Gurban Bayram, may yet be extended as each of the announced periods includes one or more weekend day, which since 2006, would mean that a day in lieu public holiday should be declared.

In 2008, the 2 Muslim Eids occurred on weekdays, so the issue did not arise.

But the government did increase the length of the Novruz public holidays in 2007 (07-Mar-2007) and 2008 (08-Dec-2007), and therefore we expect the government of Azerbaijan to declare March 25 and 26, 2009, as additional day in lieu public holidays to compensate the weekend of March 22-23.
