Azerbaijan Could Declare March 18 Public Holiday

(Posted on Monday, December 29, 2008)

Source: RFE/RL (Baku)

Azerbaijan's parliament voted 100 to 7 to hold a referendum, on March 18, 2009, on constitutional changes which would remove a two-term limit on the presidency of Azerbaijan.

Presidential election days being official public holidays (27-Aug-2008), we expect Wednesday, March 18, 2009, to be declared a one-off public holiday in Azerbaijan.

If this is the case, then the question of March 19 will remain, as the Novruz public holidays are set to begin on Friday, March 20, 2009. If the referendum is approved (quite likely) then March 19th might also be declared a one-off public holiday.
