Bermuda Establishes New October Public Holiday

(Posted on Thursday, April 10, 2008)

Source: The Bermuda Sun (Hamilton)

The Government of Bermuda has decided to create a new holiday called "Heroes' Day", to be held for the first time on October 13, 2008.

In addition it was announced that the Queen's Birthday public holiday, usually observed in mid-June, will no longer be observed, beginning in 2009.

The new Heroes' Day public holiday has had a tough time finding a home. Originally it was supposed to replace the Bermuda Day public holiday (19-Sep-2007) but this proposal was withdrawn due to the public furor that it caused (16-Mar-2008).

The cancellation of the Queen's Birthday public holiday is also likely to raise some hackles, and the present announcement might not be the end of this new public holiday's tribulations.
