Leading union leaders have submitted a draft law to the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Julio César Valentín, to amend law 139-70, which currently moves the May Day/Labour Day public holiday to adjoin the nearest weekend, so that in the future, the Labour Day public holiday would remain on the set date of May 1st.
Recall that, last summer, the Supreme Court of the Dominican Republic declared as un-constitutional, articles 1-2-4 of the law 139-97, which move the August 16 Restoration Day public holiday to the following Monday, whenever August 16 falls on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday (21-Feb-2008).
