Iraq Overhauls List Of Public Holidays

(Posted on Friday, February 8, 2008)

Source: Asia Times

Iraq has overhauled its list of public holidays, removing 3 public holidays that were indirect reminders of Sadam Hussein, created a new national day on October 3, and added 2 new Shiite holidays. In addition, Iraq's parliament passed a law to change the national flag.

In 2003, Iraq's new governing council had voted to scrap 2 of the holidays associated with Saddam Hussein; the one on July 14, the anniversary of the overthrow of the monarchy in 1958, and the one on July 17, the anniversary of Saddam's Ba'ath party revolution (14-Jul-2003).

Interestingly enough, this latest revision does re-instate the July 14 public holiday, albeit in a more generic fashion than before 2003.
