Kazakhstan Senate Votes July 6 Public Holiday

(Posted on Monday, June 23, 2008)

The plenary session of the Kazakh Senate adopted an amendment to the Kazakh law On holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan to establish a new state holiday Day of the Capital on July 6.

The aforementioned bill had already been approved, last week (18-Jun-2008), by the Majilis (Kazakhstan's Lower House of Parliament). The final step is for this bill to be signed into law by President Nazarbayev.

As this new holiday falls on a Sunday this year, and as per the 2001 amendment to the law on public holidays of Kazakhstan (14-Dec-2001), a day in lieu would automatically be given on Monday, July 7, 2008.

The most recent amendment to the law on public holidays of Kazakhstan was in 2005 when the Majilis (Kazakhstan's lower house of parliament) approved a bill creating 2 new public holidays: Orthodox Christmas and Kurban Ait (the Feast of Sacrifice), starting in 2006 (28-Dec-2005 and 02-Jan-2006).
