Lebanon Declares May 26 Public Holiday To Celebrate End Of Presidential Stalemate

(Posted on Friday, May 23, 2008)

President-elect, Gen. Michel Suleiman, has agreed with Parliament Speaker, Nabih Berri, to declare Monday, May 26, 2008, a one-off national public holiday.

This public holiday is meant to celebrate the election on Sunday of Lebanon's next President, hence ending a political stalemate that had left Lebanon without a President since November 2007 (the election of the President next Sunday is a final formality).

Note that next sunday will also mark the anniversary of the May 25 withdrawal of Israeli troops in 2000, which was marked as a public holiday from 2000-2005 (25-May-2000), before being relegated to the second Sunday of May as part of the 2005 revision of public holidays in Lebanon (06-Oct-2005).
