In a surprise, last-minute move, the celebrations of the July 19, 2008, Martyrs' Day public holiday, have been downgraded from a national to a city-level ceremony, and invitations to foreign diplomats to attend the ceremony have been cancelled.
This might bring into question the future of the public holiday itself, considering that it is a public holiday commemorating the death of Aung San, whose daughter, Aung San Suu Kyi, is the current military junta's best-known opponent.
