Peru Announces 2009 Public Sector Holidays

(Posted on Monday, December 15, 2008)

Peru's Presidencia del Consejo de Ministros (PCM) has issued the decree DS Nº 082-2008-PCM fixing the list of 2009 adjoining and bridge public holidays to be taken by the Peruvian civil service.

Note that despite the title of the decree, Declaran días no laborables a nivel nacional, para los trabajadores del Sector Público, durante el año 2009, these 5 extra days will be considered to be workable days (días hábiles) to be recuperated at other times during the year, as specified in Article 2 of the aforementioned decree.

Article 4 of Decree Nº 082-2008-PCM leaves open the possibility for the private sector to follow the same terms, but leaves it up to employer-employee discussions within each company.

The Adjacent Holidays system was put in place in 2006 (15-Sep-2006) and continued in 2008 (08-Feb-2008), albeit on a smaller scale, as 6 days had already been declared for the APEC and EU summits in Lima (07-Feb-2008).
