The Etats Généraux de l’Outre-Mer have formally petitioned the French government to declare October 9 as an annual public holiday to commemorate the abolition of slavery in Saint Barthélemy.
The "décret n° 83-1003 du 23 novembre 1983 relatif à la commémoration de l’abolition de l’esclavage" established a specific annual public holiday for each of the French overseas territories (DOM/TOM).
However, since July 15, 2007, Saint-Barthélemy is an independent French overseas administrative area, no longer a part of Guadeloupe, and as such, the May 27 public holiday for Guadeloupe is no longer be a public holiday in Saint Barthélemy (16-Jul-2007).
The request, formally titled "demande au gouvernement en vue de fixer la date du 9 octobre pour date officielle de commémoration annuelle de l'abolition de l'esclavage dans la collectivité territoriale de Saint-Barthélemy", justifies the choice of October 9 as the date of an annual public holiday commemorating the abolition of slavery in Saint Barthélemy, by the fact that Sweden (then ruling Saint Barthélemy) abolished slavery on October 9, 1847.
