Chief executive officer for the prime minister’s office, Vaasatia Poloma Komiti announced that the government may not declare a new public holiday on March 1st, the birthday of the new head of State, Tuiatua Tupua Tamasese Efi.
Or, he added, at least not before many years, reminding everyone that a public holiday on the previous head of State's birthday had only been declared, after he had reigned for over 40 years.
The previous head of state, King Malietoa Tanumafili II, one of the world's longest reigning monarchs, died last year (11-May-2007 and 15-May-2007). His birthday, on January 4th, was a public holiday in Samoa until 2007. Subsequently, the Public Holidays Bill 2007 (20-Dec-2007), confirmed the cancellation of the previously observed "Head of State’s Birthday"public holiday, which was automatically cancelled following the death of King, and Samoan High Chief, Malietoa Tanumafili II.
