Sudan's GoSS has observed today the first annual occurrence on the Martyrs' Day public holiday commemorating the 2005 death of Dr. John Garang de Mabior.
Dr. John Garang de Mabior was, at the time, First Vice President of Sudan and President of the semi-autonomous Southern Sudan.
A one-off public holiday was declared in 2005, immediately after Dr. John Garang de Mabior's death (04-Aug-2005), but an annual public holiday was only declared last summer (31-Jul-2007).
