Afghanistan Election Commission Confirms August 20 Election Date

(Posted on Thursday, March 5, 2009)

Source: BBC South Asia (Kabul)

Afghanistan's Election Commission has rejected a recent decree from President Hamid Karzai that would have moved the date of the upcoming elections from August 20, 2009, to April.

The August 20 date was announced earlier this year (29-Jan-2009) and, at the time, we forecast that the date would be declared a one-off public holiday, based on past patterns (06-Dec-2004), and the fact that August 19 and 22 are already public holidays, while August 21, a Friday, is the weekly day off in Afghanistan.
