Argentina's Chief of Cabinet, Sergio Massa, and Minister of the Interior, Florencio Randazzo, have signed Resolución 572 which confirms that Friday, July 10, 2009, will be a one-off public sector holiday aimed at containing the spread of the H1N1 flu.
This resolution, which had been hinted at yesterday (07-Jul-2009), was issued pursuant to Article 100, Section 1, of Argentina's Constitución Nacional.
Strictly speaking, the resolution only applies to all government services and workers, but in its accompanying statement, the government strongly urged the private sector to abide by the resolution voluntarily to avoid the regrouping of potentially infectious people on a día sandwich (since July 9 is already an annual public holiday).
In addition, Argentina's Central Bank (Banco Central de Argentina) has declared measures ranging from the closing of the stock and FOREX markets, to the shutdown of the electronic compensation system (Medios Electrónicos de Pago - MEP), which according to the Central Bank's official communique, amounts to a total bank holiday (en la práctica significará una inactividad bancaria total).
