Argentina's INADI (Instituto Nacional contra la Discriminación, la Xenofobia y el Racismo) has introduced another proposal to the government to rename the October 12, Día de la Raza, public holiday into the Día de la Diversidad Cultural Americana.
The INADI had already made a similar proposal two years ago (10-Oct-2007), and an omnibus public holidays bill (18-Dec-2008) that would have made changes to the observance and name of many public holidays, including the October 12 public holiday which would be renamed "Día del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural" and moved to the second Monday of October (as is the case in Canada and the USA).
The October 12 public holiday is currently under attack in most of Latin America.
In 2002, Venezuela had renamed its October 12 public holiday to "Día de la Resistencia Indígena" (12-Oct-2002), and then last week, Peru's plenary Congress renamed October 12 from Día de la Raza to Día de los Pueblos Originarios y del Diálogo Intercultural (08-Oct-2009), while Chile's Senate introduced a bill that would eliminate Chile's October 12 public holiday and replace it with a June 24, Mapuche Indian new year (We Tripantu), to be called the "Día de los Pueblos Originarios" (08-Oct-2009).
