Both Australia's Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, and Opposition Leader, Malcolm Turnbull, have rejected calls to change the date of the Australia Day public holiday, made yesterday by 2009 Australian of the Year, Mick Dodson.
One of the alternative dates being proposed is May 27, the anniversary of the 1967 constitutional referendum that allowed Aboriginal people to be counted in the census and subjected to federal laws.
