The Legislative Council of Australia's State of Tasmania has rejected pending legislation which proposed that whenever Anzac Day fell on any Sunday or on Easter Monday, the following day would be made a day in lieu public holiday.
This legislation represented the state-level implementation (05-Jun-2009) of last January's agreement by the Council for the Australian Federation (CAF) to harmonize the treatment of the ANZAC Day public holiday, across all Australian states and territories, when ANZAC Day falls on a Sunday (15-Jan-2009).
Currently, the Australian states of Tasmania and Victoria do not give any day in lieu when the ANZAC public holiday falls on a Sunday. Under the terms of the CAF agreement, and of the pending Tasmanian legislation, effective in 2010, when ANZAC Day falls on a Sunday, all Australian states and territories would observe a day in lieu public holiday on the following working day.
This vote could be a temporary setback, as the legislation was voted down with the unexpected support of independent members of the house. A final answer, one way or the other, is not likely until after the spring session of the Tasmanian parliament which sits until December 2009.
