Australia's Queen's Birthday Public Holiday Update

The QPSU (union of public sector workers of Australia's State of Queensland) is calling on the state government to consider shifting the Queen’s Birthday public holiday to the first Monday in October.

The main effect of such a change would be to increase the number of public holidays marked in the second half of the year to a total of 3. Currently, there are 8 public holidays in Queensland during the first half of the year to June, as opposed to just 2 in the second half of the year until Christmas.

A change in the date of the Queen's Birthday public holiday date has been proposed in the past in the State of Tasmania (10-Jun-2008), Victoria (26-Sep-2008), and Queensland (06-Dec-2007), while the Northern Territory Committee co-chair, Fran Kilgariff, has proposed cancelling the Queen's Birthday public holiday in exchange for the creation of a Northern Territory Day public holiday (04-Jul-2009).
