The Chairman of the Australian Trucking Association (ATA), Trevor Martyn, has written to Treasurer Wayne Swan calling for uniform public holidays across all of Australia's states and territories.
In his letter, written the day before this year's "Family and Community Day" ACT public holiday, Trevor Martyn proposes that the Productivity Commission should hold an inquiry into the cost of Australia’s inconsistent public holidays.
In recent years, some changes have been made to public holidays across various states to harmonize them, such as the recent Council for the Australian Federation (CAF) agreement to harmonize the treatment of the ANZAC Day public holiday, when ANZAC Day falls on a Sunday (15-Jan-2009), although the State of Tasmania currently seems poised to remain outside of the scope of the agreement (18-Oct-2009).
However, in other respects, some Australian States are still going their own lonely merry way when it comes to setting public holidays, as most-recently witnessed in the case of the ACT decision to move the "Family and Community Day" public holiday from one that was common to neighboring Victoria State, to one not shared by any other state or territory (16-Oct-2009).
