Bangladesh Weekly Holiday Update

(Posted on Thursday, March 5, 2009)

Source: The Daily Independent (Dhaka)

Bangladesh's Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, informed the Jatiya Sangsad that her government has no plan, currently, to change the weekly day of rest in Bangladesh from Friday to Sunday. But, she did add, that the reintroduction of public holidays on Sundays would be studied at a later date.

There are regular calls from the business community (29-Jan-2007) for the change of the weekly day of rest from Friday to Sunday, but so far this is the first time that the government of Bangladesh has actually mentioned it as a possibility.

Interestingly, as part of her reply, the Prime Minister mentioned that Sundays are being observed as the weekly day of rest in 36 out of 57 countries of the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC), namely: Pakistan, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Morocco, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Albania, Kazakhstan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Lebanon, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Gabon, Suriname, Guyana, Cameron, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Gambia, Uganda, Senegal, the Ivory Coast, Togo, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Mali, Djibouti, Sierra Leone, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mozambique and the Comoros (this list is not entirely exact, please see our individual public holidays pages at www.qppstudio.net for specific information on each country's weekends).
