Brazil Mid-Week Public Holidays Bill Moves To Senate

The Comissão de Constituição e Justiça e de Cidadania of Brazil's Chamber of Deputies has finally approved a bill that would move to the previous Monday, fixed-date public holidays that fall on another weekday.

The Projeto de Lei 2756/03 is one of many such bills that have popped up in recent years. It was approved by the Comissão de Educação e Cultura in 2004, and now moves to the Senate for approval. If approved by the Senate, it would then go to the President for ratification.

The 4 following public holidays would be excluded from the move; January 1st, September 7 (Independência do Brasil), Carnival, and Good Friday.

A similar bill, moving some mid-week public holidays to Mondays, was introduced in 2007 (11-Jul-2007 and 27-Nov-2007) and seems to have died for lack of attention. More recently, a bill that would have moved some mid-week public holidays to Fridays was introduced and rejected (09-Apr-2009 and 06-May-2009).

The moving of fixed-date public holidays to the previous Monday, was instituted in July 1985 by a decree by then President José Sarney, but this decree was abrogated in October 1990.
