With this year's occurrence in Colombia of 3 long weekends in the month of June, the debate on the selection of Christian public holidays, and the setting of their dates according to the Ley Emiliani, is again becoming a bone of contention between the government and the trade unions.
According to Colombia's Law 51 of 1983, the dates of the 10 annual religious holidays and 8 annual civil holidays are moved to an adjoining Monday, when the annual date falls on either of a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday (including public holidays, such as the recent Corpus Christi, which always occur on a Thursday, by definition).
Law 51 of 1983, is also named Ley Emiliani, after its architect, who died 4 years ago (02-Oct-2005).
This year, there will be 3 consecutive long weekends in June in Colombia; June 15, June 22, and June 29.
As usual, the Government claims that these long weekends have helped bolster internal tourism, while trade unions say that with 3 long weekends in the month of June, most modest households will only be able to take advantage of one of these long weekends, with no money left for the other 2 long weekends.
