Costa Rica's Legislative Assembly Third Plenary Commission has ratified the bill submitted by Social Christian deputy, Jorge Eduardo Sanchez. The Commission's Brief 16.330, fixes the date of the observance of the Guanacaste Annexation public holiday to July 25, regardless of the weekday on which July 25 occurs.
This legislation, proposed last fall (29-Nov-2008), and passed in the lower house last week (19-Jun-2009), is the latest step in the legislative unraveling of the Abel Pacheco administration 2005 law (17-Mar-2005) which specified that 4 public holidays would move from mid-week to the following Monday (April 11, July 25, August 15, and October 12).
The August 15 public holiday was made immovable again last year (05-Oct-2007), after a previous failed last-minute attempt (10-Aug-2007), now leaving only 2 of the original 4 moving public holidays, April 11, and October 12.
