Following his re-election to a 3rd term in office, last night, Dominica's Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, announced that his government would declare a public holiday in the month of January, "to celebrate and savor the achievement of our having conducted a peaceful and conclusive process of electing a new government".
Although no specific date has yet been mentioned, we would expect this additional public holiday to be declared for Monday, January 4, 2010, thus affording Dominica's population a 4-day period of New Year public holidays.
A public holiday was also declared, on Friday, May 6, 2005 (05-May-2005), following Prime Minister Skerrit's re-election to a second term.
More generally, such post-election public holidays are common in Caribbean countries (08-Sep-2009, 13-Mar-2009, 22-Feb-2005, 21-May-2003, 21-Oct-2003, 27-Nov-2003, and 23-May-1997).
