The Dominican Republic legislature is considering a measure aimed at cutting costs by holding all elections on a single day, and which would effectively cancel the Election Day public holidays by stipulating that election day should always be a Sunday.
Currently, Presidential elections are held every 4 years, on May 16, and that date is an official public holiday in the Dominican Republic. Sometimes, the day before is also declared a public holiday (14-May-2008).
