Egypt's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) has announced that, in Egypt, according to astronomical calculations, the Muslim month of Ramadan will start on Saturday, August 22, 2009.
The beginning of Ramadan calculations, based on the NRIAG methodology, show that, in Cairo, on the day of the New Moon (August 20), the Moon sets 4 minutes before the Sun, and that, therefore, the 21st of August is not the 1st of Ramadan.
Though the NRIAG announcement does not specify the date of the End of Ramadan, we can use the NRIAG methodology to see that, in Cairo, the New Moon occurs at 21:44 on September 18, and that on the next day, the Moon sets 11 after the Sun, thus meeting the NRIAG criteria by a factor of 2, confirming that, in Egypt, the first day of the month of Shawwal (the "Eid Al-Fitr" festival) will be on Sunday, September 20, 2009.
