A few Indian states have begun to declare a public holiday for Tuesday, October 13, 2009, to coincide with the upcoming Assembly elections.
Specifically, the Haryana Government has notified that October 13th would be observed as a state public holiday in all public offices under Haryana Government including education institutions, boards and corporation on account of the General Elections to Haryana Vidhan Sabha. Additionally, and more rare, it was notified that the said days would be a paid public holiday in the State of Haryana under Sub Section (1) of Section 135-B of the Representative of the People Act, 1951 to enable every person who is employed in any business, trade, industrial undertaking or any other establishment situated within the State of Haryana.
For its part, under provisions of the Negotiable Instruments Act 1881, the Maharashtra Government declared October 13 as a public holiday in the state to enable people to vote in the 288-member Assembly elections.
