Indonesia's General Elections Commission (KPU) rejected demands by Christian groups to change the date of the April 9 upcoming national elections in East Nusa Tenggara Province.
In Indonesia, the date of legislative and presidential elections are traditionally declared a public holiday (30-Mar-2004 and 29-May-1999). The same also generally is true for some municipal and regional elections (16-Jun-2007 and 06-Jul-2008).
The date of the upcoming legislative elections was announced last summer (11-Aug-2008) but, earlier this year (12-Jan-2009), the Christian West Timor region requested a change in date because the date of the upcoming elections would coincide with the Christian Maundy Thursday religious holiday.
The negative response of the KPU has so far been officially motivated by the fact that, a change in date of the legislative elections, would cause a change in the recently, albeit tentatively, announced date for the follow-up presidential election (23-Jan-2009).
