Yesterday, the bill declaring Orthodox and Old Believers' Christmas as public holidays in Latvia was rejected in its third reading in the Saeima (Latvia's Parliament).
The amendment was passed in its second reading, earlier this month (05-Feb-2009), and hopes in the Russian minority of Latvia were high that it would pass this time, although similar bills were rejected at the 11th hour in the past (16-Jan-2003).
It is expected that the final reading of the draft amendments to the Law on Holidays, Remembrance and Celebration Days will grant the status of a celebration day to Orthodox Christmas.
