Madagascar's transitional government (Haute autorité de la transition, aka. HAT) has declared Friday, May 22, 2009, a one-off bridge public holiday.
This will lead to a 4-day week-end, as Thursday, May 21, 2009, is already an annual public holiday for the Ascension (13-Jan-2009).
Reasons for this additional public holiday were not given, though it could be thought that it is a delayed compensation for the fact that the Ascension Day public holiday was left out of last year's official list of public holidays (16-Jan-2008) due to the fact that both the Ascension and May 1st public holidays occured on the same date in 2008.
