Earlier today, Malaysia's Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, announced in Parliament that the Malaysian Cabinet had finally come to the decision to celebrate Hari Malaysia as a national public holiday, starting on September 16, 2010.
The demand for Malaysia Day, currently a public holiday only in the State of Sabah, to be made a fully national public holiday had been a hot topic for years (01-Sep-2008).
September 16 is the date when the states of the island of Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak) joined the other peninsular states whose independence from Britain is celebrated as a public holiday on August 31.
Three acts will need to be amended to make September 16, a compulsory paid public holiday in the private sector; Section 60D of the Employment Act 1955, Section 103(1) of the Labour Ordinance (Sabah), and Section 104(1) of the Labour Ordinance (Sarawak).
