Late last night, the government of Mali declared that today, Tuesday, April 21, 2009, would be a one-off public holiday to enable the population to go and get their electoral registration cards for the upcoming, April 26, communal elections.
Two years ago, for the presidential election, in an analogous manner, April 25, 2007, had been declared a one-off public holiday to enable people to go and collect their voting cards (24-Apr-2007).
This was followed, on April 30, 2007, by another one-off public holiday on the day after the presidential election (30-Apr-2007). Whether the government of Mali will also declare a public holiday on the day after this year's communal elections remains to be seen.
