Despite many conflicting news stories, appearing in the Mexican media this weekend, it now appears, that there will be only one Revolution Day public holiday in Mexico, this year, on Friday, November 20, as opposed to the previously scheduled date of Monday, November 16, 2009.
The conflicting newspaper articles are due to a typographical error in the original draft bill (29-Oct-2009), which read "... durante 2009 el día de descanso obligatorio será el viernes 19 de noviembre" (in 2009, November 20 is a Friday). This led some of the Mexican media to report that the public holiday scheduled for Monday, November 16, 2009, had been moved to Thursday, November 19, 2009, and further led them to assume that Friday, November 20, 2009, would also be a public holiday, thus causing them to report an imminent 4-day "Megapuente".
However, a careful reading of the Gaceta Parlamentaria número 2882-D of November 5th (06-Nov-2009), shows that the typographical error was noted by the deputies, and that they corrected it in the final version of the amendments to the Article 74 of the labour code, which now say that, in 2009, as an exception to Section VI of Article 74 of the labour code, the non-working public holiday corresponding to the Revolution Day public holiday will be Friday, November 20, 2009 (Section VI of Article 74 of the labour code is the one that fixes the Revolution Day public holiday to the 3rd Monday of November).
The amendments, which now go to the Senate for approval, also stipulate that, in 2010, as an exception to Section VI of Article 74 of the labour code, the non-working public holiday corresponding to the Revolution Day public holiday will be Monday, November 22, 2010.
