Moldova's Prime Minister, Vladimir Filat , has announced that his government had decided to declare Friday, December 25, 2009, Western Christmas, for the first time as a non-working public holiday.

He went on to say that his government would introduce legislation to make December 25 an annual public holiday, starting next year (începând cu 2010, ziua de 25 decembrie va fi declarata sarbatoare oficiala).

Finally he declared Monday to Wednesday, January 4-6, 2010, as one-off non-working public holidays, with the effect that Moldavians will be on holidays for 10 consecutive days, from January 1-10, 2010, inclusively.

As was the case last year (10-Dec-2008), these extra non-working public holidays will be compensated by the government having declared 3 Saturdays as working days; January 16, February 1st, and March 13, 2010.
