Nepal Considering 2-Day Weekends

(Posted on Thursday, February 5, 2009)

Earlier today, the committee formed to review public holidays recommended that Nepal change over to a five-day week.

Currently, the weekly day of rest in Nepal is Saturday.

In 1995, Sunday had been declared an additional weekly holiday in the courts and later in the public sector. But the change was soon reversed by the King.

The committee, formed last month (14-Jan-2009) "to review and systematize the declaration and duration of public holidays in Nepal", also recommended a 3-day holiday for the public sector for the Dashain festival, and that the government change office hours to 9 a.m.- 5 p.m, except in the winter when the weekly working week would be reduced to 35 hours.
