Following a report by the Administration Restructuring Commission (ARC), the Government of Nepal is preparing to reduce the number of public holidays currently enjoyed by civil servants, while moving to a 2-day weekend.
The ARC´s recent report suggests that the government cut the number of annual public holidays from 41 days to 7 days; Nepali New Year, Dashain, Deepawali, Buddha Purnima, Republic Day, Maha Nawami and Holi.
On the other hand the commission recommends scrapping the present practice of six working days a week and running government offices from Monday to Friday only, albeit for longer hours, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Finally the report asks the government to follow the Western, Gregorian, calendar and avoid the use of Bikram Sambat calendar (which runs from mid-April to mid-April).
The ARC was formed in January (14-Jan-2009) and had already made preliminary recommendations a month after its creation (05-Feb-2009). The ARC report will come into implementation once the cabinet endorses it.
